Journal of medieval and humanistic studies, 2008 : p. 107-118
The Synonyma of Isidore of Seville enjoyed an exceptional success in the late Middle Ages. This success lasted until the years 1560-1570 and was particularly important in German Europe. The analysis of the content of the manuscripts and of the literary posterity suggests that theSynonyma were seen principally as an ascetic and spiritual book: this probably explains the popularity of this work at the end of the Middle Ages.
