https://www.invaluable.com/auction-lot/rare-14th-c-anglo-norman-fragment-of-penitence-da-216-c-d074b04b06 : "wo leaves of a 14th century Anglo-Norman medieval manuscript beautifully inscribed in old French in an English hand on vellum, for a total of 4pp of densely packed text. The fragment is part of the "Pénitence d'Adam," an early Christian retelling of Adam's story from the Old Testament. The alexandrine verses are written in double columns, with approximately 283 lines of text, the capital letters of each line highlighted in red, and the rubrics underlined in red. About 39 lines to the column are remaining. The fragment was discovered in an old Cambridge binding signed by Garret Godfrey, ca. 1520. Expected wear including toning and edge discoloration corresponding to the outline of the book binding. Some wrinkles, gentle folds, and loose threads. The lower part of some of the lines are missing and a portion of side margin with the end-lines of the right column verses are cut away. Else good. 5.5" x 7.5." Comes with two former catalog descriptions, one probably from an early 20th century auction." |
